The Elmwood Cemetery

P.O. Box 35
Shepherdstown, WV 25443

In Memory of James Carter Price, III 1956-1989

Elmwood Cemetery Association, Inc. was chartered in 1869. A volunteer Board of Directors governs it. Income is derived from the sale of burial plots, a trust fund, and donations. This is not a perpetual cemetery. A full-time caretaker is employed; volunteers supply all other labor. We believe that we have a sacred trust to preserve these hallowed grounds.

There are approximately 120 graves of casualties of the Battle of Antietam buried in the "Soldiers Graveyard" near the front of Elmwood. There are an additional 120 Confederate veterans' graves throughout the cemetery. An "Army of Northern Virginia" battle flage marks each. Supposedly, there are two G.A.R. veterans buried here. One has been confirmed; the other has not.
